In a bold step toward addressing the growing challenges of climate change in Kenya’s agricultural sector, Savannah Honey has joined forces with the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) to roll out a transformative training initiative in Makueni County. The partnership, implemented under the BRAINS Project —Building Equitable Climate-Resilient African Bean and Insect Sectors—is equipping local trainers with cutting-edge knowledge to help farmers adapt, thrive, and build sustainable livelihoods in an era of unpredictable weather patterns.

The Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop, held in Wote Town, marks a significant milestone in the collaboration. It brings together agricultural extension officers, community leaders, and beekeeping practitioners to strengthen their capacity in climate-resilient bean production, insect-based solutions, and sustainable farming practices that integrate apiculture with crop farming.

A Holistic Approach to Climate Resilience

The BRAINS Project is designed to address two critical pillars of food security: crop production and insect-based agriculture. By combining expertise in bean farming—a staple crop in many Kenyan households—with innovations in insect farming and beekeeping, the initiative offers farmers a diversified, climate-smart approach to agriculture.

Participants in the workshop are being trained on practical techniques that include:

Climate-resilient bean varieties and farming methods

Integrated pest management using insect-based solutions

Sustainable beekeeping practices that enhance pollination and crop yields

Value addition and market linkages for both beans and honey products

The training goes beyond theory. It is designed to create a ripple effect—empowering local trainers who will, in turn, cascade the knowledge to thousands of farmers and community groups across Makueni and beyond.
