NAIROBI, KENYA – Savannah Honey, represented by CEO Kyalo Mutua, took part in the high-level Youth Agripreneurship Policy & Partnerships Dialogue Forum held at Iconic Plaza Hotel, Nairobi. The forum brought together youth agripreneurs, financial institutions, private sector actors, Government representatives, and development partners in a collective effort to strengthen the systems that enable young people to transition from training into sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises.

The dialogue underscored a critical reality: Kenya’s youth are eager to engage in agriculture, but they need more than just skills—they need a supportive ecosystem that includes access to finance, markets, technology, quality inputs, certification, mentorship, and continuous enterprise support. Without these building blocks, the dream of agribusiness remains out of reach for many.

Spotlight on the Personal Initiative Agripreneurship (PI Ag) Programme

A major highlight of the forum was the Personal Initiative Agripreneurship (PI Ag) Programme, developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The programme is designed to equip young people with entrepreneurial skills while promoting nutrition-sensitive agribusiness and environmental sustainability.

Through the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) pilot, the PI Ag Programme has already reached 507 youth agripreneurs across six counties. Additionally, officers and trainers have been equipped with skills in agripreneurship, business planning, and financial management—creating a multiplier effect that extends the programme’s impact far beyond the initial cohort.

For Savannah Honey, the discussions reinforced a message that has long been at the core of the organization’s mission: youth empowerment in agriculture must go beyond training. Young agripreneurs need a holistic support system if they are to build businesses that can grow, create employment, and contribute meaningfully to economic development.

Beekeeping: A Gateway to Sustainable Enterprise

The forum also explored how beekeeping and agribusiness present a powerful opportunity for Kenya’s youth. With the right skills, modern technologies, and strong market linkages, beekeeping can evolve from a subsistence activity into a sustainable and scalable enterprise.

Beyond honey production, the sector offers immense potential for value addition through a wide range of products, including:

Beeswax-based products

Propolis

Bee pollen

Royal jelly

Bee venom-based products

Candles and cosmetics

Other innovative value-added products from the hive

These high-value products open doors to both domestic and international markets, offering young agripreneurs diverse revenue streams and the ability to build resilient businesses.

A Call for Stronger Coordination

The forum further called for stronger coordination between Government, counties, financiers, training institutions, private sector players, and development partners. The goal is to create clear and accessible pathways for young people—from training to production, value addition, and ultimately to markets.

This collaborative approach is essential if Kenya is to unlock the full potential of its youth in agriculture. It requires aligning policies, pooling resources, and fostering partnerships that bridge the gap between ambition and reality.
